DUNROBIN CASTLE:
DUNROBIN CASTLE is believed to sit on the site of an earlier medieval fort, with the oldest surving portion of the existing castle first mentioned in 1401. In the intervening 600+ years the castle inevitably has witnessed much drama, from clan infighting and contest, through military assault during the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 (Clan Sutherland supported the British).
Following a devastating fire in the early 19th century the castle was remodelled and rebuilt by Sir Charles Barry, famously the architect of the Palace of Westminster in London, in the then fashionable Scottish Baronial style. Barry’s rich garden design is based on those at Versailles.
